This is an online essay taken from 'Slate' magazine, and written by Karen Lehrman. The essay uses a series of photographs taken through the ages to illustrate the changes and developments that have taken place since the 1950s in the realm of fashion photography. Lehrman questions the place of art within fashion photography, and uses several photographic examples to illustrate the different approaches used by different fashion photographers. The photographs in the essay are taken from a range of sources, including magazine editorial spreads, and adverts and catalogues.
